A Parent’s Love

I have experienced weeks of restless nights full of wandering thoughts and emotional fatigue due to the news from one of my children of an important event that was to occur in their life. Today, as I am writing my thoughts for this devotional, the event is taking place and I will not be there. This is the first time ever that I have not participated in any of my children’s important life events. It was not easy to come to this decision, but in my heart, I knew it was what God had prepared me to do as I prayed and sought guidance. Although I love my child unconditionally, it has brought me sorrow knowing that what is deemed and believed to be a joyful occasion in the mind is such deception from a heart that has turned away from loving God and is being led by the passions and desires of this world.

As a parent, the love for a child is deep. Throughout their lives, it grows as they develop and become more independent. There are seasons when the love is questioned, challenged, and even rejected. When it has to be gentle and when it has to be tough.

I am brought to tears when I think of the love our Heavenly Father has for us as His children. How he knitted us in our mother’s womb, already knew us and loved us deeply ( Psalm 139:19).

Even as we lived in our sinful lives, God still loved us and extended his mercy and saved us as we are reminded in Ephesians 2:1-5, “And you were dead in the trespasses and sins in which you once walked, following the course of this world, following the prince of the power of the air, the spirit that is now at work in the sons of disobedience— among whom we all once lived in the passions of our flesh, carrying out the desires of the body and the mind, and were by nature children of wrath, like the rest of mankind. But God, being rich in mercy, because of the great love with which he loved us, even when we were dead in our trespasses, made us alive together with Christ—by grace you have been saved—”

Our unsaved children and loved ones are loved more by God than we could ever love them. God is rich in mercy! We trust you, God, for their salvation.

Prayer: Heavenly Father, we are so grateful for your great love and mercy extended to us when we were dead in our trespasses and sin. Help us to continue to pray for the salvation of our children and/or our loved ones who have not yet experienced the love of Christ and are still seeking the passions of this world. May we continue to be examples of your unconditional love and compassion toward them. Amen
