James 1:5 says, “If any of you lacks wisdom, let him ask of God, who gives generously to all without reproach, and it will be given him.” This verse is such a comforting reminder that God is not stingy with His wisdom. He wants to guide us in every decision, big or small. Often, we run to Google, podcasts, or friends first, but James encourages us to go straight to God, trusting that He desires to give us what we need to walk faithfully each day.
Biblically, wisdom isn’t just knowledge or being smart. Wisdom is seeing life from God’s perspective and choosing to act accordingly. Proverbs tells us that “The fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom” (Proverbs 9:10). This means acknowledging God’s authority in every area of life and humbling ourselves before Him. Wisdom involves understanding His ways, aligning our hearts with His Word, and applying that truth to our daily lives.
Here are four ways to grow in wisdom:
Ask God daily for wisdom (James 1:5). Pray before decisions, however small.
Read and meditate on Scripture, letting it shape your thoughts and choices.
Seek counsel from godly people who reflect biblical wisdom in their lives.
Practice humility – wisdom grows in a heart willing to admit it doesn’t have all the answers.
Apply what you learn, because wisdom isn’t just knowing; it’s doing (James 3:13).
Practically, wisdom shows up in our homes when we speak gently rather than reacting in anger. At work, it looks like pausing before responding to a difficult email or conversation, praying for God’s perspective. With friends and family, wisdom helps us listen deeply instead of quickly offering our opinions. It also teaches us when to speak and when to remain silent. In all areas, wisdom leads us to live in a way that reflects God’s grace and truth.
Next Step: Today, choose one area – your home, work, or friendships – where you need God’s wisdom most. Pause and ask Him specifically for it. Write down James 1:5 and carry it with you this week as a reminder that God promises to give you wisdom generously when you ask.
