The due date for this devotional marks the second year of the unexpected death of my fifty-two-year-old niece. Never in my life had I cried out to God with such heartbreak due to the circumstances of her death, but also with such fear of the unknown. My niece left behind her fifteen-year-old daughter, who is in my custody. The word wisdom automatically became part of my vernacular. I need to be careful about how I live every day to make wise decisions. I can honestly say that every step I am taking to guide my teenaged great niece has not been done without asking God for wisdom and strength.
In Ephesians 5:15-17, the Apostle Paul, reminds us of this, “So be careful how you live. Don’t live like fools, but like those who are wise. Make the most of every opportunity in these evil days. Don’t act thoughtlessly but understand what the Lord wants you to do.” It’s important that we seek God’s wisdom because along with that comes understanding of what to do. When situations arise in our lives where direction is needed, we should not lean on our own understanding because this is foolish. We are to submit to God and He will make our path straight just as stated in Proverbs 3:5. When we choose not to be wise in our own eyes, and we fear God and persistently avoid evil, the promise is that it actually will bring health to our body and nourishment to our bones (Proverbs 3:7-8). How amazing is that!! I know for a fact that the more I sought God’s wisdom regarding my great-niece, the less feeling of anxiety and helplessness I experienced and the better I am feeling today.
Take a moment to think about something that requires wisdom. Be honest, ask forgiveness, humble yourself before God and ask for wisdom. Remember, it doesn’t come instantly and requires an obedient and patient heart.
Prayer: Heavenly Father, we pray for wisdom. Not only does it bring understanding of what to do but it brings health to our body. May we be thoughtful in all we do and make the best of every opportunity to walk in wisdom. Amen!
