Autumn Devotional
Series:  Walk in Wisdom

In preparation for our autumn walk, Walk in Wisdom, over the next eight weeks, we'll be reading about the topic of biblical wisdom. We'll share a new devotional each week, written by one of the Hesed leaders, to gain insight into why wisdom is so important in our walk with Christ.

Words Matter

There is an activity done with school-aged children to teach them that what we say matters and we must choose our words carefully. They’re told to squeeze a bunch of toothpaste out of the tube and then put it back in the tube. The children quickly learned that once the toothpaste is out of the tube, you can’t put it back in. In the same way, words can’t be unsaid, and harmful ones, even when we apologize, can leave a scar.

Proverbs 3:5-8 (ESV)

Trust in the Lord with all your heart, and do not lean on your own understanding.

In all your ways acknowledge Him, and He will make straight your paths.

Be not wise in your own eyes; fear the Lord, and turn away from evil.

It will be healing to your flesh and refreshment to your bones.

Proverbs 1 tells us that wisdom starts with having fear of the Lord. Proverbs 1:7 says, “The fear of the Lord is the beginning of knowledge; fools despise wisdom and discipline.” As we continue to read through the chapter we see that God gives us a warning of what happens when we reject wisdom and gives a condition.

James 1:5 says, “If any of you lacks wisdom, let him ask of God, who gives generously to all without reproach, and it will be given him.”  This verse is such a comforting reminder that God is not stingy with His wisdom. He wants to guide us in every decision, big or small.
